Benefits of Invisalign
Invisalign offers many benefits over traditional braces. With Invisalign, you can get your teeth straightened without many of the inconveniences of braces. That means you can:
- Keep eating all your favorite foods
- Brush your teeth normally–no brackets or wires to clean around
- Enjoy nearly invisible correction
- Avoid irritating wires and brackets
- Make fewer visits to the dentist
- Get straighter teeth faster
Because Invisalign aligners are removable, you won’t have any diet restrictions. You won’t have to give up pizza, bagels, popcorn, crusty breads, and other foods you enjoy. And you won’t have to learn to eat everything with a knife and fork–you can bite into sandwiches normally.
And you also won’t have to learn to clean your teeth around brackets and wires. You can just remove your aligners and brush normally. You will have to brush your teeth more often, but it won’t have to forever the way it seems with braces.
Many people are happy that their Invisalign aligners will be nearly invisible. They want to avoid showing brace face to everyone in the office. With Invisalign, few people will notice your aligners, and you can even take them out for pictures if you want.
Wires and brackets don’t just look bad, they can feel bad, too. Wires and brackets for braces often irritate cheeks and lips, but the smooth plastic of Invisalign aligners won’t bother you.
With braces, you have to visit the dentist every time you need your braces adjusted. With Invisalign, you can take several aligners at once, meaning you can go months sometimes without needing a dental visit.
And with new innovations in Invisalign treatment, you can get straighter teeth faster than ever. While Invisalign used to take about the same amount of time as traditional braces, these days it can take half the time!
How Invisalign Works
All orthodontics works on the same principle. Your body has a mechanism to reshape bones under pressure, especially the jawbone. By applying constant force, the goal is to get the body to reshape bone around the teeth, allowing them to move. Traditional braces apply this force using brackets and wires. Invisalign uses clear, BPA-free plastic aligners to apply this force.
Invisalign is an innovation of the computer age, and it uses advanced digital technology to plan your treatment. Digital scans of your teeth are used to determine their current position, and a program is used to plan the optimal position for your teeth. Then computers design the optimal movement path for your teeth. This movement path is broken down into a series of steps. Those steps are translated into aligners designed to accomplish the steps.
Once your aligners are ready, you’ll come to our office for an initial fitting. When you first put on your aligner, you’ll notice that it feels snug, and you may develop some minor soreness. This soreness will typically respond to over-the-counter pain medication, and it will also pass after a day or two. Wear your aligner for 20 hours or more a day (22 is optimal), and always carefully follow hygiene instructions.
Initially, you will wear your aligners for two weeks, and you may need to come into the office after each aligner. As you make progress, you’ll probably get several aligners at a time for treatment. And you may be told to wear your aligners for only a week before moving on to the next one. When you’ve gone through all the aligners, your teeth will be straight.
Improvements in Invisalign
Because Invisalign uses computers for all its treatment planning and can track procedures as they progress, it is able to constantly improve the process. That’s why Invisalign in Rockland County has been able to improve dramatically in recent years.
New materials for the aligners allow them to deliver better force for longer than ever, which is part of the reason treatment is faster and more predictable. Invisalign as also developed new ways of delivering force to teeth, which allows it to treat more cases than ever. And computers have learned better how to move teeth to achieve the same results in smarter stages.
Put this all together, and you’ll see that Invisalign can now treat more cases than ever. It can treat them more reliably than in the past. And it can treat them faster–usually faster than with traditional braces.
